Irish company’s joint cheese venture in Michigan

Glanbia Nutritionals an Irish company is looking forward to set up a shop with a whole lot of cheddar, cheddar cheese in Michigan.

Brain Phelan said in a press release that the company was delighted to announce their project.

Glanbia Nutritionals is entering the Michigan project as a joint venture with the Dairy Farmers of America, Michigan Milk Producers Association and Foremost Farms.

Phelan said that “Consistent with Glanbia Nutritional’s growth strategy, this proposed venture will build on their position as the number one producer of American- style cheddar cheese and simultaneously expand the company’s global position as a supplier of advanced technology whey protein to the nutritional sector,".

The final site for the project has not been selected yet, but according to the local news reports there are there are three in the running in central Lower Michigan.

According to the United Dairy Industry of Michigan the state has around 420,000 cows. Governor Rick Snyder addressed last month that Michigan cows second to only Colorado's in terms of milk production sarcastically that Colorado would have to "moove on over."

Jamie Clover Adams the Director of Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development explained after the Governor Snyder’s comments last month that that reflected the milk produced per cow.

Clover Adams said "The significance of that is that the more productive they are, just like anything else, more efficient they are [it] lowers your cost of production,"

Because of the genetics, feed and "cow comfort" the production in milk increased.

She said the dairy industry in Michigan is $15.7 billion business, and the demand for dairy products is going worldwide.
