India firmly rejected Pakistan’s latest efforts to bring the Kashmir conflict to the world stage and to voice concerns regarding the Indus Waters Treaty during a session of the United Nations Security Council. In reaction to statements made by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador P Harish, criticized Pakistan’s hypocrisy regarding issues of terrorism and global stability. While speaking at the UNSC, Dar stated that Kashmir is a "disputed territory recognized internationally" and described India’s recent actions regarding the Indus Waters Treaty as "unfortunate and unjust". He called for the UN to help resolve the Kashmir situation based on what he referred to as important Security Council resolutions. India responded strongly. Ambassador Harish pointed out the significant differences between the two countries.
"On one side, you have India — a mature democracy, a growing economy, and a diverse and inclusive society. On the other side is Pakistan, which is immersed in extremism and terrorism, and constantly seeking financial help from the IMF,” he remarked. He further mentioned that while the Council talks about peace and safety, it should consistently uphold the principle of not tolerating terrorism. "It is inappropriate for Council members to preach about values while engaging in behaviors that are disapproved by the global community,” he noted, making a clear reference to Pakistan's involvement in supporting terrorism. India reaffirmed that Jammu and Kashmir is a vital part of the nation and that any questioning of its sovereignty is unacceptable. It also stressed that the Indus Waters Treaty, a long-standing agreement between the two countries, should not be taken to international arbitration unless Pakistan first rectifies its breaches.
This is not the first occasion Pakistan has tried to use global platforms to address the Kashmir situation.
Yet, such attempts have mostly not gained support, with many powerful nations viewing the issue as one to be resolved bilaterally. India’s strong and calm reply enhances its reputation in the world as a responsible democracy that emphasizes growth and peace, while highlighting Pakistan’s ongoing use of distraction strategies.
