More than two thousand pets being cared for in shelters, humane societies and rescue group across Michigan are expected to find new homes on Saturday (April 29), when ‘Empty the Shelters’ make a comeback.
The Bissell Pet Foundation is covering adoption fees at 69 participating sites across the state. They range from Southfield to South Haven and from Houghton to Monroe County.
People, who want to adopt a new pet, will only have to pay the small fee for licensing for their county, which ranges from $7 to $12.

Some of the shelters require adopters to be pre-approved by filling out paperwork online or in person. The Kent County Animal Shelter in Grand Rapids uses a "golden ticket" system to make the it easier for pets and their new owners to connect on what can be a busy day.
The adoption event comes on the heels of two other successful Empty the Shelter days, last May and October. Approximately 2,800 cats and dogs found homes during those events.
"Many pets in shelters and rescues have never experienced a loving home and Empty the Shelters will give so many pets the second chance they deserve," Cathy Bissell, founder of the Bissell Pet Foundation, said in a news release.
An estimated 40,000 pets are euthanized in the state each year, because they cannot be placed in homes.
