A Michigan woman is in critical condition after police said that she plunged from the seventh floor of an apartment building to escape a fire.
The fire broke out on the seventh floor of an apartment building on Grand River Avenue on Detroit’s west side, said police.
Kia Brown was encouraged by Antonio Smith, who then caught her. He was holding out a blanket while others put couches and cushions on the ground.
"I was talking to her to jump out the window, that was the only way she was going to get out of there," Smith said.
He said that they were able to catch Brown, but she bounced off and fell to the ground.
Brown's friend Andrew Belcher said, "When she fell, the blanket didn't land squarely on the mattress, then she went into shock." She added that Brown hit the ground too hard.
Immediately she was rushed into surgery at Detroit Receiving Hospital as she suffered a broken pelvic bone and two collapsed lungs.
Police said that the ‘Fire Department’ crews put out the fire and the other three people, who were in the apartment, were taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
Residents in the apartment said that they tend to ignore the smoke alarm because there are a lot of false alarms in the building.
