Sold Pepsi bottles recalled in Michigan due to possible contamination

According to a consumer advisory issued on Monday by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development beverage company, PepsiCo has recalled certain 16.9 ounce Pepsi bottles that were sold this year in Michigan due to possible contamination from tiny metal flecks.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said in a press release on May 8 that the investigation was initiated by a consumer complaint that determined certain products contained metal flecks due to a malfunction of equipment during bottling.
Laboratory analysis identified the small flecks between .1 and .3 millimeters as iron and chromium.

The metal flecks found during the investigation were very small, but there is a concern that larger flecks could have been formed when the equipment failed,” MARD said. The metals were identified as iron and chromium.

The company said that there is no safety issue. But it received at least 18 complaints regarding a metallic taste, from late February to early April.

In March the company removed the cola from about 200 stores in Michigan, but some of the bottles may have been purchased before the market withdrawal occurred. Other Pepsi products such as Diet Pepsi and Pepsi Zero Sugar are not affected.

PepsiCo is urging consumers to check if they have purchased cola under the codes HC022373 and HC022473 and return these products to stores if customers still have them. Anyone with questions can call (866) 433-2652.
