Police are investigating on a bomb threat at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Ann Arbor.
A staff member of the Community center called police at about 9:20 a.m. on Monday (Feb 17) to report the threat at the Hebrew Day School at 2937 Birch Hollow Drive, said Ann Arbor police Detective Lt. Matthew Lige.
The staff member informed the police that a male caller called the school, which is located at the center and said there was an explosive device in a backpack and it would be detonated, Lige said.
Soon the center was evacuated and about 200 students and staff members were taken to an off-site location, Lige said. He also said that police are now working with the FBI and Michigan state police, and sniffer dogs were searching the premises as of 11:15 a.m.
After Lt. Lige said the search was completed and no explosive devices or any suspicious packages were found. Students were allowed back into the building.
Lige said the approach was different than a typical bomb threat, because of the specific nature of the threat. AAPD is now working with the FBI to determine who made the bomb threat.
Birch Hollow Drive was closed on Stone School Road and the surrounding neighborhood was blocked.
The Indy Star reports that a similar kind threat was made at the Indianpolis JCC. Similar threats were made in across the Country on Monday, but it was not immediately known if there was a direct connection, Lige said.
According to reports the JCC centers in Harrisburg and York counties in Pennsylvania were evacuated on Monday for bomb threats.
