Keep Michigan Black Bears at a Distance

Michigan residents are asked to keep the state’s to help keep the state’s Up North icon a wild animal by keeping bears at a distance. With many people removing the bird feeders in the summer months feels that it is an east answer to bear problems.

The wildlife communications coordinator of Department of Natural Resources, Katie Keen said: “When situations occur concerning a bear, some form of food has usually attracted the bear into the area.”

“The common element is usually a bird feeder – seed, suet and even hummingbird feeders. The good news is a homeowner can choose to take control of the situation,” she said.

According to data, the state’s estimated black bear population is about 12,000 - with 2,000 in the northern Lower Peninsula and 10,000 across the Upper Peninsula.

Black bears are shy animals, but their ability to sense smell is exceptionally good, they can remember a food source and will go to places it normally would not.

In addition to bird feeders, pet food, garbage, barbeque grills and bee hives also can attract bears.

Experts suggest that pet food must be stored indoors, as should house garbage until the time of pickup.

“Bear are smart, so we have to be smarter,” Keen said. “They are wild animals that are unpredictable and can travel many miles. Your habits can affect those around you, and a bear that loses its natural fear of humans because food has been introduced can end up being bold or dangerous and may need to be put down.”

Bears eat plants, berries, acorns, insects, berries and occasionally small mammals. Because they eat almost anything, their eating patterns change depending upon the easiest food source available.

“Don’t wait for the first time a bear knocks down your bird feeder or garbage can. Be proactive and don’t let a habit form,” Keen said.

The bear population is managed through regulated hunting season. The state’s hunting seasons vary by the bear management unit. This year’s season starts on September 8 with a total of 7,140 hunting license available this fall. The license are distributed through a preference point system.
