The University of Michigan is examining the possible outbreak of the norovirus, in the wake of more than 75 students reported illness.

The University reported on Wednesday, that, between 75-100 students, who are living in the residence halls in the West and South quads required treatment for symptoms, that include vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain.

Dr. Robert Winfield, chief health officer, said that, "this appears to be a viral-type illness, like norovirus, test results sent to the Michigan Department of Community Health won't be complete until late Friday afternoon or early next week."

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes, the norovirus as a very contagious virus.

"Since norovirus is highly contagious, students who develop symptoms should isolate themselves in their rooms until they are symptom-free for 48 hours," Winfield added.

According to the Washtenaw County Health Department,  it is not uncommon to see cases of norovirus,  this time of year.
