India's one-day international vice-captain Shreyas Iyer faced an unexpected health issue when an injury from the match in Sydney against Australia led to his hospitalization. The medical team from the Board of Control for Cricket in India discovered that Shreyas had internal bleeding, which resulted in his transfer to the Intensive Care Unit. Although he is no longer in danger and is recovering well, the BCCI refuted claims that suggested Shreyas had surgery to fix the internal bleeding. As reported by the Times of India, Iyer’s injury was serious, but the BCCI medical team acted quickly to get him to a hospital. "Shreyas is feeling much better. His recovery is happening faster than the doctors predicted. I am in regular contact with Dr Rizwan Khan, the Indian team doctor who stayed with Iyer to help with his care at the Sydney hospital. Usually, he'd take six to eight weeks to heal completely, but he might surprise us and recover sooner," said BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.
"The doctors are pleased with his improvement. He has begun to do his usual activities again. His injury was quite serious, but he has healed and is safe now, which is why he was moved from the ICU to a regular room in the hospital yesterday," he continued. Addressing the rumors of surgery, Saikia clarified that the batter did not have surgery but underwent a different procedure. This alternative procedure is what contributed to his quick recovery, something surgery would not have allowed. "Shreyas did not have surgery; he went through another procedure, which is why he is recovering so rapidly," Saikia explained. "He is talking, smiling, and even joking with the nurses," a TOI article mentioned.
India's T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, also mentioned that he has had a few conversations with Iyer over the phone. "He is recovering well and responding to us over the phone, which indicates he is doing perfectly fine. It is unfortunate what happened, but the doctors are taking good care of him. He will be monitored for the next few days, but there is nothing to worry about," Suryakumar said on Tuesday.
