Michigan Muslims are celebrating Ramadan to fight for hunger

The Muslims in Michigan are celebrating the month of Ramadan which is from 6th of June to 5th of July not only by praying and their particular ritual of fasting, they are also conducting a campaign to fight against hunger. The Michigan Muslim Community council expects to collect and distribute 50 tons of food to the people across the country according to the non-profit organization.

The director of MMCC, Sumaiya Ahmed told that, "Every year, the Michigan Muslim community collaborates with partners to organize volunteering events during the month of Ramadan. The two pillars of Islam are fasting during this blessed month of Ramadan, there is no better way to give back than to gather masses of people and have them do something for those in need while fasting. This is not something that is done just in Ramadan, but we like to emphasize its importance during this month."

According to the organization, some volunteers are collecting food from Gleaners Community Food Bank in Detroit and Forgotten Harvest in Oak Park, while others are packing the boxes of food to be delivered or picked up for Zaman International Hope for Humanity and the Amity Foundation, to distribute among the poverty-stricken families . The Flint Muslim Pantry is providing food and water free of cost to the Flint Residents. Several mosques are conducting canned food drives and food box collection. 15 mosques are providing dinner for the local families, at the end of their daily fast.

Nausheen Razvi, the coordinator of the effort said that, “As Muslims are facing pangs of hunger from their fasting, we will remind them that many people in Michigan are hungry due to poverty."
