Personal Data of 1.9 million may have been Compromised

State officials said yesterday (3rd Feb) 1.9 million Michigan workers, security and personal information may have been compromised.

The officials said the problem stemmed up from a software update to Michigan’s unemployment system that made name information, wage information and social security numbers of people available for nearly 3 months, which are only accessible by employers and third-party payroll vendors.

There is no indication yet that anyone used the information for malicious purposes.

Until the investigations are completed the number of people who are affected will not be know officials said. People who are at potential risk are whose payroll is processed by one of 31 third-party vendors that works with the Unemployment Insurance Agency.

The software was updated on October 10 last year. But the “vulnerability” was identified on January 30th last month and to fix the unauthorized access a block was implemented that day.

The director of the Department of Technology, Management and Budget, David Behen said in a statement, “We will work with our third-party vendors and our state team to review our processes and procedures to avoid incidents like this in the future.”

He also said that if a breach is confirmed, all the affected workers will be notified immediately.
