Every child loves to explore. This could leave every parent with a worry about sudden injuries. It is always better to prevent injuries rather than dealing with them latter. However, it is not always possible to avoid instances of injuries. In such cases, first thing to do is not to panic. Go ahead with the first aid swiftly. Here are few first aid tips, which every parent should aware of.

Cut or graze

If there is a cut accompanied by bleeding, press firmly with a clean cloth in the area, till the bleeding stops. Clean under lukewarm water and give a gentle pat. If the wound is dirty and is caused by an animal, cleanse it with water and lather with little soap. Apply a thin layer of antibiotic cream over the broken skin. Cover it with a bandage or gauze. Visit a pediatrician if you cannot control bleeding after many attempts of first aid and if a cut is caused by an animal bite.

Burn

Hold the burned area under running water or apply a cold wet towel till the pain subsides as first aid. A loose bandage can be used to cover small blisters. Incase burns are on face, hands and genitals or if they are large call doctor immediately. Do not use cold compresses for burns more than tenth of the body. In order to prevent hypothermia, the first aid is to cover the child with clean sheet or blanket. Rush to emergency.

Nose bleed

In case of nose bleed do not tilt your child’s head back. Let your child sit upright. Loosen if there is any tight clothing around the child’s neck. Pinch the nose at its lower end close to nostrils and apply pressure for around five minutes. As you apply pressure, let your child lean forward. Do not release and check nose as it can cause prolonged bleeding. Visit a doctor after first aid.

Insect bite

If a stringer is left by an insect, gently scratch with the finger nail and remove it without breaking. Hold a cold compressor over the area for some time in case of itching. Apply calamine lotion or topical antihistamine or a 1% hydrocortisone cream incase the skin is not broken. Contact your doctor for further assistance immediately after first aid.

Seizer

In case of Febrile seizure, remove the outer clothing of your baby to aid in keeping them cool. When the seizer is over, let the child rest on their side with head tilted back. Visit pediatrician after first aid for further advice.
