OnePlus 15 is set to be officially introduced next week with a new third-generation flexible OLED display from BOE that has a 1.5K resolution and refreshes at 165Hz. This resolution is less than the 2K display that was featured on the OnePlus 13. The launch will take place in China on October 27, and an executive from OnePlus China has explained the reasons for the lower resolution screen of the OnePlus 15. The brand mentions some technical restrictions that make it hard to combine a high refresh rate with a high resolution. Additionally, the executive provided several reasons why the screen on the OnePlus 15 would be superior to the one on the previous model. In a post on Weibo, Li Jie Louis, the President of OnePlus China, discussed why the OnePlus 15 won’t have a 2K display. The executive mentioned that the focus was on the 165Hz display, and because of certain limitations in the materials used for brightness and the technology of circuits, achieving both 2K resolution and 165Hz refresh rate was tough.
The executive further noted that before, the best resolution for screens with a 165Hz refresh rate was only 1080p. However, the new third-generation BOE Flexible Oriental OLED is unique as it can support a 165Hz refresh rate with a 1.5K display, allowing the upcoming OnePlus 15 to provide a high refresh rate while accepting a lower resolution. At the same time, the executive emphasized that this choice was not based on cost issues. He stated that the display on the OnePlus 15 is actually more expensive than the 2K screen of the OnePlus 13. He pointed out five technological hurdles faced in achieving a 165Hz refresh rate, including the time it takes to charge a row of pixels, the limitations of the computing capability of screen chips, issues with touching and display response, and problems related to the lifespan of the screen.
The brand managed to tackle these challenges by using a specially designed X3 luminous material. Additionally, they redesigned the screen circuit and the screen chip. Besides the 165Hz refresh rate, the OnePlus 15 display will include better display quality, feature 1.15mm "ultra-narrow" bezels, advanced eye protection, and support a brightness of 1 nit, according to the executive.
As previously mentioned, the OnePlus 15 will officially launch in China on October 27. It will run on Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. The phone will be equipped with a 7,300mAh Glacier Battery, along with support for 120W wired charging and 50W wireless fast charging. The flagship model is confirmed to include a triple rear camera setup featuring a 50-megapixel main camera from Sony and a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto lens.
