Non-life insurance policies lack clarity: IRDA

Insurance Regulatory Authority of India (IRDA) Chairman J Harinarayan expressed his concern on the increasing number of complaints being received by the policy holders of health insurance. While speaking in Hyderabad at the first meeting of the newly-formed Health Insurance Forum, he said that IRDA had received 92,898 complaints in the non-life sector, of which 38,891 were with regard to health insurance.

Pointing out the lapses in this sector, Harinarayan suggested for more clarity in policy documents in non-life insurance schemes. The IRDA Chairman said that of the complaints received in non-life insurance schemes, about 35 percent cases are pertaining to health insurance and attributed lack of clarity is the reason for mess. He also pointed out about the draft of policy or language used might be ambiguous The insurance companies should take up the responsibility of providing good communication and the policy holder should be in a position to understand the terms mentioned easily.
