A sea of 'exhibitionists' took to the streets of New York in their underwear to celebrate National Underwear Day and create a new Guinness World Record.

Hundreds of young men and women flocked to the Times Square cladded in 'flashy' boxer shorts, briefs and bras as part of a cheeky challenge — an attempt to break the record for the largest number of people in one place wearing only their underpants.

Organizers had arranged for the massive gathering hoping to break the Guinness World Record of 2,270 people - set at the Utah Undie Run in 2011.

However, the gathering failed to outdo the Utah record as just over 800 turned up in boxers and briefs in the Times Square.

The organizers are hopeful of breaking the record next year, however.

People of all ages, shapes and sizes turned out in their bare essentials including an elderly couple who too participated in the undie revelry with gusto.
